A cold sore, also known as a fever blister, is a small, painful blister that typically forms on or around the lips or mouth. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), although in some cases, they can be caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which is typically associated with genital herpes.
Cold sores are highly contagious and can be spread through direct contact with the blister or the fluid inside it. The initial infection with the herpes virus often occurs during childhood or adolescence, and the virus remains dormant in the body until it is triggered by factors such as stress, fatigue, sun exposure, or a weakened immune system. When a cold sore outbreak occurs, it usually begins with a tingling or burning sensation, followed by the formation of a small, fluid-filled blister. The blister then bursts, crusts over, and eventually heals within a week to ten days.
